The Delhi metro was more than just a boon for the common city traveller in the bustling metropolis of the Indian Capital. Of course, a cheap efficient commuting system which reduces the burden on the roads is a massive requirement of the city, but it also gave the city an element of uniqueness in the way it's people travelled as compared to the rest of India when it's first line got fired in December 2002.
Today, as the Delhi metro provides transport to over 2 million commuters daily, one can wonder how far the rail network has come with the city which has not failed in evolving everyday for the past decade. For a regular commuter like me, at the end of the day, it comes down to the time I save and the money I save while covering a distance of 15 kilometres everyday on round trips from patel nagar to janakpuri. Of course, this is complemented by the metro card system, which is in fact one of the most unrecognized yet critical tools in making the DMRC capable enough to deal with millions of the city's student and working class every year. You travel in the comfort of A.C. coaches, while the information about the stops is continuously communicated on inter-com. When traveling, you enjoy the outside view to your heart’s content.
It is obvious that you will have problems like the demand of more running cars every minute on each line when the population increase is faster than the increase in rail capacities with expansion. However, at the end of the day, the increased convenience for a commuter, coupled with the growing utility of public transport gives more reasons to a Delhiite like me to be proud of the same.
